Become a Host

Each year thousands of patients travel to Boston for medical treatment and with them come family members and friends to lend support. Whether the trip is planned in advance or the result of an acute medical crisis, many arrive in an unfamiliar city with no place to stay and often lack the financial resources to pay for a hotel. Hospitality Hosts provide a compassionate presence and a welcoming home to which to return at the end of a long day.

What it Means to Be a Hospitality Homes Host

Hospitality Homes Hosts are trained volunteers who provide a clean and comfortable place to sleep and access to a bathroom in their private homes. Many hosts also offer limited kitchen use, however, our volunteer hosts do not provide meals or transportation. Few of our hosts live within walking distance of the major hospitals but most live in areas with access to public transportation (subway or buses). All hosts attend a training session and our staff visits each host home before it becomes active.

Housing is provided on a short-term basis and Hospitality Homes charges no fees. Instead, guests are encouraged to make donations to the organization to sustain the program.

The Rewards of Hosting

  • Hosting is a wonderful way to help people who are in very stressful and difficult circumstances – and it's easy and flexible. You don't have to leave your home, you host only when it is convenient to do so, and you can tailor your hosting to fit with your lifestyle. For example, you determine how many guests you want to have, what length of stay you prefer, whether to accept children and/or patients, whether or not to offer kitchen privileges, etc.

  • Hosting allows you to contribute something other than money, something far more personal–your home–and it allows you to help someone directly.

  • Hosting helps patients as well as guests. Patients are comforted in knowing that their loved ones are staying in a comfortable home setting instead of sitting alone in a hotel room.

Hosting: Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to be a Hospitality Host?
To be a host in our program, you need to provide two things: a clean, comfortable place to sleep, and access to a bathroom.

Where do hosts live?
Hospitality Hosts live throughout the greater Boston area. We are always in need of hosts in Brookline, Newton, Boston, and Cambridge, particularly in areas that are convenient to the Longwood Medical Area.

Do hosts ever complain of troublesome guests?
This rarely happens because of our guest screening process. However, if a host has any difficulties, he/she can contact the Hospitality Homes office immediately and we will make other arrangements for the guest.

I don't allow smoking in my house. Is this a problem?
Not at all. Other than the above requirements, you set the "house rules" for guests, including smoking restrictions. Other conditions you are in control of include: whether or not to accept children and/or patients as guests, how many guests you prefer at one time, and how many nights guests can stay. Hosting is meant to be flexible; you tailor it to meet your lifestyle. In making placements, we use other information about your home, such as availability of parking, flights of stairs, and any pets.

My schedule changes. Can I not accept guests during certain dates?
Yes. You can accept guests as your schedule allows and take time off when needed.

What about liability?
All guests must sign a liability release upon arrival at the host home. We also recommend that hosts check your homeowners' or renters' liability insurance coverage and inform your insurance carrier that you are volunteering with Hospitality Homes. No guest has ever made a claim against Hospitality or a host; however, it is always prudent to be cautious.

For More Information
Please contact our office at 617.482.4338 or by email to ask any questions and to request a Hosting Information Packet. If, after reviewing the packet, you are interested in becoming a host, return the enclosed Orientation Sign-Up Slip, noting when you would be available to attend an orientation session. After you have attended a New Host Orientation session, we will arrange for a staff member to make a visit to your home.
